Election History of the Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District

The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District was formed as a Title 32 Special District in 1965 to provide recreation services to the community.  This included the construction and operation of the R.C. Icabone Swimming Pool, which opened in 1966.  The needs of the District evolved through the years as the community asked for parks, trails, open spaces, and programs to be added.  All of this was accomplished without an increase in property tax.

When built, the pool had an expected lifespan of 25 to 30 years.   Knowing the pool was not constructed to last several decades, the Recreation District has gone to the ballot for funding for the pool six different times .  (One  of those times included capital construction for Pathfinder Regional Park. )

The ballot questions presented various options: building a recreation center, replacing the pool, or repairing and upgrading the pool.  Below are links to each election year with information on what was proposed and the final results.
